Medicine Buddha 12 Vows

Medicine Buddha 12 vows as below. Today we talk about the first vow how it applies to our modern world. Many people when health issue chant medicine buddha name and mantra but what is the deep meaning behind?

The First Great Vow of the Medicine Buddha states:

"I vow that in a future life, when I attain supreme enlightenment, a blazing light will radiate from my body, brightly illuminating countless, limitless, and boundless realms. This body will be adorned with the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor signs of a great being, enabling all sentient beings to become equal to me, with no difference."

The Deep Meaning Behind the Vow

  • Inherent Buddha-Nature: The vow does not say "I will be special and you will worship me." It vows that every living being will attain the exact same radiance, dignity, and perfection. It affirms that our true essence is pure, luminous, and whole, regardless of current afflictions.

( So we can actually visualise the true nature is luminous liuli. When have sickness sometimes i visualise this light and remind myself , we are bright in nature.)

  • Healing Starts with Illumination: True medicine is not just curing physical sickness; it is illuminating the root cause of suffering—ignorance (avidyā). The light dispels spiritual darkness, restoring balance between mind, body, and spirit.

  • Embodied Compassion: The physical perfection (the 32 marks) symbolizes that inner spiritual realization naturally manifests as radiant, harmonious outer energy.

Daily Life Application

  • Radiating "Micro-Light" in Daily Interactions:

    • When entering a room, a meeting, or a family space, carry a calm, uplifting presence instead of projecting stress, irritability, or fatigue.

    • Practice seeing others' light—treating people based on their potential and goodness rather than their temporary flaws or bad moods.

  • Cultivating the Mind-Body Connection:

    • View self-care, healthy movement, breathwork, and nourishing food not as vanity, but as honoring and clearing the body so your vitality can flow freely.

  • Lifting Others Instead of Competing:

    • When you achieve success or develop a skill, use it to elevate those around you so they rise to the same level, embodying the vow: "enabling all beings to become equal to me."

Exercise to Handle loneliness depression for aging which many faces

The First Vow of Medicine Buddha offers a profound shift in mindset and daily practice specifically for loneliness and midlife low moods:

"I vow that a blazing light will radiate from my body... enabling all sentient beings to become equal to me, with no difference."

Reframing Loneliness & Midlife Depression

  • Reclaiming Inherent Dignity (Your Light Never Diminishes):

    • Society often glorifies youth and external productivity, making people after 50 , 60 70 feel "past their peak" or forgotten.

    • The First Vow reminds us that true radiance comes from wisdom and inner clarity, not external validation. Your worth is completely intact, whole, and luminous—it does not fade with age.

  • From "Left Out" to "Lighthouse":

    • Loneliness usually turns our focus inward on what we lack ("No one calls me," "I am alone").

    • The vow shifts the posture from seeking light from others to becoming a source of light. When you decide to radiate warmth, smile at a stranger, or guide someone younger, you instantly break the isolation bubble.

  • Equality & Connection:

    • Depression often creates the illusion: "Everyone else is living a happy, connected life while I am struggling alone."

    • The vow’s message of universal equality reminds you that behind closed doors, every human navigates vulnerability, aging, and sorrow. You are not isolated in your human experience; you are part of a shared collective journey.

Daily Life Rituals to Shift the Energy

1. The "Inner Lapis Glow" Morning Practice (5 mins)

  • Sit comfortably. Place your palms gently over your heart center (Dan Zhong / CV17).

  • Inhale deeply into your abdomen, visualizing a warm, vibrant lapis lazuli blue light expanding from your chest to every cell, filling any hollow or heavy feeling with steady vitality.

  • Exhale slowly through the mouth, releasing the feeling of being overlooked or tired.

  • Set the morning intention: "Today, I let my presence be warm and steady. I am enough."

2. Shift from "Seeking Attention" to "Micro-Giving"

  • Depression shrinks our world; generosity expands it.

  • Once a day, practice the vow’s spirit of lifting others: send a genuine text of encouragement, share a kind word with a cashier or cleaner, or mentor someone without expecting anything in return. Radiating energy outward naturally dissolves the stagnant feeling of loneliness.

What It Tells the Modern World

  • No Need to Compare or Feel Insecure Social media always makes us feel we are not good enough—keep chasing branded things, using photo filters, and comparing who is more successful. This vow reminds us that our true worth doesn’t come from all this superficial stuff. Real confidence and glow come from a peaceful heart and healthy inner energy.

Heal from the Inside Out Nowadays, so many of us are burnt out, stressed, and falling sick easily. Just taking painkillers or slapping on quick fixes won't solve the root problem. True health starts from calming our noisy mind, clearing out negative emotions, and taking care of our energy daily.

True Leaders Lift People Up Good leadership is not about showing off power or "I am better than you." A genuine leader doesn't gatekeep or keep people down—they share their knowledge, guide others, and help everyone around them shine just as brightly.

Morning Luminous Breath (3–5 mins):

  • Sit comfortably with an upright posture and relax the shoulders.

  • Inhale deeply into the abdomen, visualizing clear, warm, radiant light filling your chest and spreading to every cell.

  • Exhale slowly, releasing any accumulated fatigue, rush, or mental clutter.
