Joss Paper is originated from Chinese Traditions long before anything else.. What our great grandparents do and a way to overcome stressful mind when they come down all the way from China and work hard for us. They have no help and no people to talk to, so praying and burning joss paper build a strong foundations of courage and fearlessness for them. Last time where got this religion say that religion is evil or what? Got time is to work le... Now people too free... this religion that religion, slowly old tradition gone and is all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. For me I try my best to search for temple to cultivate good tradtion. But ultimately the tradition begins from your home and family. But again if ur family disagree with ur religion, than dont provoke and irritate them.. just in ur heart and own space chant heart sutra. Or go library or macdonald write heart sutra.

Me: U are a Chinese , burning Joss paper has deep meaning and more than what we see, it is only some people mistaken, burn so much and dont know the meaning. Buddhism is from India and is not a religion but a practice of conquering the disturbed mind and develop bodhicitta (loving kind compassion and Wisdom). A person who keep saying u are buddhist and cant do this and that and even u can chant alot sutra, u still do not understand the meaning.
When Buddha go around to teach people buddhism, he respect all other people's religiona dn traditions but just give a extra wisdom to it.
Remember all are illusions, proper rules and regulations needed, extra one are all human created worries. When Buddha once see a group of people do Fire Offerings.... He suggested the group to do fire puja and extinguise fire of ignorance and etc...(my sec 4 Buddhist teacher share with me one)
For me when I burn Joss Paper I visualise all my ignorance, jealousy, self induce stress to be burn away and brighten my aura. Than once fire burn big I visualise the mini smoke and the fire brighten the universe.
I am neither what religion. I am that I am. For me I dont join group. I dont go what cell group etc. I come and go like dragonflies.
NB: Ancestor worshipping is not asking for favours, but to fulfil one’s filial duties. The act is a way to respect, honour and look after ancestors in their afterlives, guaranteeing the ancestors’ well- being and positive disposition towards the living, as well as the living descendants possibly seek the ancestors’ guidance or assistance.
The social or non-religious function of ancestor worship is to cultivate kinship values like filial piety, family loyalty, and continuity of the family lineage.
